Downers Grove Ranked In Top 10 'Greenest Fleets' In US
Downers Grove government earned a spot in the top 10 "greenest fleets" in the country for its eco-friendly vehicles.

DOWNERS GROVE, IL — The Village of Downers Grove has been ranked among the top 10 most eco-friendly government fleets in the nation. The Government Green Fleet Awards winners were announced at the Sustainable Fleet Technology Conference, which took place in Raleigh, NC, from Oct. 11-13. The top fleets are chosen based on their commitment to using hybrid vehicles and alternative fuels for everyday government business.
According to the Village of Downers Grove website, 83% of its vehicles are run on alternative fuel. These fuels include E-85, compressed natural gas (CNG), biodiesel, solar power, and hybrid fuels. Of the village's many vehicles powered by alternative fuels, its 5-ton trucks were the first in the midwest to run on compressed natural gas. CNG may emit up to 90% fewer emissions than regular gasoline.
Downers Grove's commitment to an eco-friendly fleet is part of its ongoing plan to be a Steward of Financial and Environmental Sustainability.

A statement on the village website calls the award a "great accomplishment" as it continues to use alternative fuels that limit the "environmental impact of fleet operations and [are] more cost effective than traditional petroleum based products."
