Drag Queen Bingo Controversy Prompts Threats At Downers Grove Library
The library has received "aggressive emails" and threats in response to a Drag Queen Bingo event planned for Oct. 11.

DOWNERS GROVE, IL — The Downers Grove Public Library has received "aggressive emails" and threats in response to a drag queen Bingo show planned for Oct. 11, according to information on the library's website. The event, which is full now, was open to children between grades 7 and 12.
The threats have included reported telephone harassment of an employee and a Facebook post asking library visitors to "bring weapons," Daily Herald reports. Police have responded with increased patrols in and around Downers Grove Library.
Controversy erupted after the library announced the event, which features drag performer Aurora Divine calling Bingo numbers and performing music. Awake Illinois released a public service announcement urging residents to share their concerns with the library "in the interest of social welfare."

Awake Illinois's post also called for the library to cancel the event.
Downers Grove Library officials released a statement shortly after saying it would not cancel the drag queen Bingo event.

The library's statement read, in part,
"Above all, the Downers Grove Public Library strives to serve all of the Downers Grove community, which includes many different groups of people and interests. Our goal is to provide a safe and accepting environment for everyone in our community, no matter their age, religion, political party, or identity. Diverse programs, such as Drag Queen Bingo, help everyone see people who are different being accepted and celebrated."
As of Tuesday, Downers Grove Public Library spokesperson Cindy Khatri told Patch the library was not commenting further regarding security and safety matters. Downers Grove Police did not immediately respond to a request from Patch for additional information and comment.
