Community members can learn about current topics in healthcare at Midwestern University’s Mini-Medical School. The Mini-Medical School will be held from 6:30 to 8:15 pm on April 16th, April 19th, April 23rd, and April 26th at the University’s campus located at 555 31st Street in Downers Grove.
Each lecture is presented by a healthcare professional at Midwestern University which is the home of the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, the Chicago College of Pharmacy, the College of Health Sciences, and College of Dental Medicine-Illinois. Topics to be covered include:
- Why OSTEOPATHIC Mini-Medical School? – Learn about the unique aspects of osteopathic medical education and medical practice. This session will outline how osteopathic philosophy and treatment principles are integrated in all aspects of a person’s diagnosis and treatment.
- OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Exams) – Objective Structured Clinical Exams or OSCE’s are used to evaluate both clinical and communication skills of students in as early as their first year of training. Medical students practice simulated-patient encounters with trained standardized patients and through simulations technology. This presentation will demonstrate an interactive OSCE encounter, similar to what is used in medical school curriculum.
- Exercise Prescription for Overall Health and for People with Specific Medical Conditions – Prescribing exercise is much more than giving advice to go “work out.” The American College of Sports Medicine is the professional organization with expertise in this area and this talk will discuss specific guidelines based on ACSM related to exercise prescription for different populations of patients.
- Osteoporosis – This lecture will provide a basic understanding of osteoporosis. Topics will include osteoporosis definition, epidemiology, risk factors, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and current and evolving trends in treatment.
Participants will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis and are able to register for individual dates. The cost of the entire program is $25; a single session is $10.
