Fake Cop Leaves Suspicious Voice Mails In Attempt To Bilk Victim

Male caller identified himself as subcontracted cop for DuPage County Sheriff, reports said.

A man claiming identifying himself as a subcontracted police officer for the DuPage County Sheriff’s Officer left two suspicious voice mails for a Downers Grove woman, reports said.

The woman told police she came home around 1:30 p.m. Aug. 25 and found two voice mails from a restricted phone number.

A male caller claiming to be an officer for “Illinois State Legal Services” advised he was calling to serve her with documents related to a DuPage County incident. She was instructed to call PR and Associates to speak with him, police said.

He then gave her a return phone number with an 844-area code and said that if she did not call him back, the matter would become criminal.

The male caller claimed he was contracted by the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office and the surrounding area. Police said the woman tried to call the phone number that the man left, but there was no answer.

The sheriff’s office advised that there was a “civil division” that handled “paper service,” but it was closed. Further, the county sheriff typically does not subcontract services, police said.

A Google search for “PR & Associates” revealed that several other people had received similar calls and that it was a phone scam.

Police said the woman has been involved in any crime or civil proceedings.
