Fake IRS Calls Unnerve Residents

Victims were told that local police were being notified unless they paid up, Downers Grove police said.

Callers pretending to be Internal Revenue Service representatives targeted Downers Grove residents in two separate phone scam incidents last week, reports said.

The first call came in at 4:10 p.m. Sept. 26, when a 55-year-old man reported receiving a computer-generated voice mail from a caller claiming he was from the IRS. The caller stated that the man owed back taxes and if he didn’t call back immediately he would be arrested.

The next day around 10:03 a.m., the man received another call from someone asking he wanted to be placed on a “no call” list.

The man told police he did not give either caller his personal information. He wanted to make police aware of the incident. Both calls were generated from California area codes.

A 74-year-old man also received a suspicious call from a male in the 202-area code around 10:03 a.m. Sept. 27, claiming he was from the IRS.

Police said the caller told the elderly gentleman that he owed $6,000 in taxes and unless he paid up, the caller would notify police.

The 74-year-old man told police that during the conversation, he gave the caller his social security number before he realized he was being scammed. He eventually hung up on the caller.

The man said he contacted Lifelock to monitor his personal credit information. He wanted police to document the incident.

The officer tried calling the 202-number back, which is the area code for Washington, DC, but had no luck.
