Feedback Sought On Proposal To Rename Walnut Park In Downers Grove

The Downers Grove Park District is considering changing the name of Walnut Park to Gelwicks Park to honor former board member Bob Gelwicks.

DOWNERS GROVE, IL — The Downers Grove Park District is asking for residents to weigh in on a proposal to rename Walnut Park to Gelwicks Park in honor of former park district commissioner Bob Gelwicks.

Gelwicks served on the board of commissioners from 2004 to 2019 and was president of the board for 14 years, a news release said. During his tenure, Gelwicks played a key role in the renovation, adoption and expansion of several park district facilities, including Washington Park, Blodgett House and McCullom Park. He also helped the park district acquire close to 15 acres north of Walnut Park.
