A Cook County jury awarded $4.2 million to a man suing Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove for not protecting him in the psychiatric ward.
Philip Sandler, 63, stabbed himself 30 times in 2007 and lost half the blood in his body in a suicide attempt that caused brain damage while he was in the hospital, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
Sandler’s lawyer said Advocate Good Samaritan had the correct procedures in place, but staff didn’t follow those procedures.
