How Downers Grove Aims To Improve Pedestrian Safety Near Schools
The move comes after a student was fatally hit by a car outside of Downers Grove North in February.

DOWNERS GROVE, IL -- Downers Grove officials have partnered with Community High School District 99 to improve pedestrian safety near schools. The ongoing initiative, which comes after a student was fatally hit by a car outside of Downers Grove North in February, includes traffic safety signs, a new stoplight, and upcoming forums to get input from residents.
New school speed limit signs have been installed outside of Downers Grove North High School. Drivers will also see electronic signs that alert them that they are approaching a school zone and post their speed as they pass.

Downers Grove Student Hit By Car Remembered As 'Strong Person'
At both Downers Grove North and South, yellow caution signs that read "Look Up" have been affixed to the ground. The purpose of the signs is to discourage students from texting while they are crossing the street.

In 2020, the village will take further measures to improve pedestrian safety near local high schools by installing a traffic light at the intersection of 63rd Street and Springside Avenue near Downers Grove South.
Members of the community are encouraged to attend upcoming pedestrian safety forums that will be held on Sept. 5 at 6:30 p.m. at Downers Grove North and at 7 p.m. at Downers Grove South.
