Immigrant Family Separation Protest Planned In Downers Grove

Close to 2,000 children have been detained.

DOWNERS GROVE, IL — As thousands of children at the U.S.-Mexico border sit detained without their parents, people across America are banding together to protest what's been referred to as"cruel" by politicians across both party lines. Downers Grove residents can take part in a local protest on June 30 that will coincide with "Families Belong Together" protests in nearly every state.

On June 30, protesters will assemble at the Downers Grove North parking lot at 4 p.m. to rally against what the Families Belong Together organizers call "the gut-wrenching forced separation of children from their families."

The Families Belong Together movement has been catalyzed by the Trump administration's recent separation of immigrant children from their families at the border. Close to 2,000 children have currently been separated from their parents since the administration began its "zero tolerance" policy on illegal immigration.

Cordoned behind a chain link fence, the children have been recorded crying for their parents, Propublica reports. Media outlets and public figures have compared the detention facilities to "cages."
