Lombard Dermatologist Given 7-Year Sentence in Insurance Scam

Dr. Robert Kolbusz was convicted in 2014 for bilking Medicare and other insurers out of more than $3.5 million.

A Lombard dermatologist convicted of scamming insurers out of more than $3.5 million was sentenced last week to seven years in prison, according to an FBI press release.

Dr. Robert Kolbusz, 58, was convicted last year on three counts of wire fraud and three counts of mail fraud after making false Medicare and insurance claims totaling about $3.76 million in payouts for bogus procedures. Kolbusz also was ordered to pay back the false claims as restitution.

During the Aug. 28 hearing, U.S. District Judge John Z. Lee said Kolbusz’s crimes were “serious for a number of reasons,” and “warranted a significant term of imprisonment,” the release stated

Kolbusz will begin serving his sentence Nov. 6.
