Police Officer, Suspect Shot During Armed Robbery: Lombard Authorities
The suspect later died of his injuries, according to police.
LOMBARD, IL — A police officer and suspect were shot in connection with an armed robbery Thursday in Lombard, according to authorities. The suspect later died, according to reports.
The robbery and shooting occurred shortly after 4 p.m. at The Smoke Shop in the area of Main Street and Roosevelt Road, WLS reported, adding the officer suffered injuries that were not life-threatening and was taken to Good Samaritan hospital.
Police responding to the robbery encountered two men in the area of Ann and Lincoln streets, and one of the suspects opened fire, prompting officers to fire back, officials told the Chicago Tribune. An officer and a suspect were both hit by gunfire.

The officer was scheduled to undergo surgery on Thursday evening and was listed as stable as of Friday morning, according to the Tribune.
The suspect was later pronounced dead.

Thursday evening, there was a heavy police presence specifically surrounding Ann Street between Lincoln and Main streets, according to an alert from the village of Lombard. Drivers were asked to avoid the area.
"Since this is an active investigation, no further details are available at this time," the alert said.
Aerial footage of the scene tweeted by NBC Chicago reporter Mike Lorber shortly before 4:30 p.m. showed multiple ambulances and at least seven other emergency vehicles north of Roosevelt Road and Main Street.
As of 4:40 p.m., Roosevelt Road was closed between Main Street and Finley Road, according to WGN reporter Shannon Halligan.
