'Porch Pirates' Steal Packages In Downers Grove

Police say two residents in Downers Grove had their packages stolen by "porch pirates."

DOWNERS GROVE, IL — Two Downers Grove residents recently reported that they had packages stolen from their front porches. "Porch pirates," as these types of thieves are called, are known to strike during the holiday season when packages are frequently shipped to and from homes.

Police say the first incident took place in the 6800 block of Valley View Dr. between Nov. 17 at 6 p.m. and Nov. 18 at 9 a.m. According to a police report, the victim realized a package had been stolen from their front porch after they received a delivery confirmation email, but could not find a package. The delivery reportedly contained two security cameras valued at $319.

Another package theft took place on Nov. 20 in the 7400 block of Canterbury Ave. The resident told police that the suspect or suspects took a package that had been delivered to their front door. After the victim noticed the package was missing, they checked with the delivery service, which showed the package had been delivered. The total loss is estimated at $100.
