Reckless Homicide Charges Filed Against Driver In Downers Grove Crash
Police say Jacob Liapis, 21, was driving 69 mph in a 25 mph zone when he lost control of his car, causing his passenger to be ejected.

DOWNERS GROVE, IL — Reckless homicide charges have been filed against a Downers Grove man who is accused of driving 69 mph in a 25 mph zone, ignoring a stop sign and losing control of his car, leading to his passenger being ejected from the car. Matthew Heffner, 23, of Darien, had been on a ventilator at a local hospital since the crash, but died of his injuries on April 7.
Police say the Jacob Liapis, 21, was driving north near the 5500 block of Fairmount on the evening of April 3 when he lost control of the car. Investigators determined the car became airborne and then rolled "several times" as Heffner was ejected from the vehicle, a news release said.
“It is alleged that Mr. Liapis’ reckless actions of ignoring a stop sign and excessive speeding cost his best friend, Matthew Heffner, his life,” DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement.

Berlin added, "This tragic loss of a young, promising life will forever change the lives of the friends and family of those who loved Matthew, including Mr. Liapis. Speed limits and stop signs serve a purpose on our roadways and I urge everyone to drive carefully and obey the law. Ignoring posted speed limits and other signage can result in tragic consequences, as we saw in this case."
“Our thoughts are with all of the people involved in this tragic incident, not only the families of those involved but those who witnessed this horrific event,” Downers Grove Police Chief Michael DeVries added.
