Red Lights On Wreaths Promote Holiday Fire Safety In Downers Grove
The Downers Grove Fire Department is displaying wreaths lit with red bulbs to encourage residents to prevent holiday fires this season.
DOWNERS GROVE, IL — The Downers Grove Fire Department is displaying wreaths lit with red lights to encourage residents to practice fire safety during the 2022 holiday season. The red bulbs will be switched to white for each fire that takes place in the village during the "Keep the Wreaths Red" initiative.
Fire officials recommend taking the following measures to help ensure holiday safety:
- Check that your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors function properly
- Use power strips
- Don't run power cords under rugs
- Don't leave candles unattended; use flame-free candles
- Clean fireplaces every year
- Don't put holiday trees in the way of exit paths
- Keep live trees three or more feet from heat sources
- Avoid connecting more than three strings of lights
- Water live trees regularly and check for dryness
The Downers Grove Fire Department's "Keep the Wreaths Red" program will extend through Jan. 1.
