Soccer Player Attacked During Game In Downers Grove: Report

The man said he was attacked after a challenge for possession of the ball. He didn't press charges, but hospital employees called police.

DOWNERS GROVE, IL — A June 3 soccer match at a Downers Grove park turned violent, according to reports, as a player was attacked by members of the other team, according to reports. He alleges a challenge for control of the soccer ball turned violent when the other player snuck up and punched him. It happened around 1 p.m., he told police.

The victim, 36, alleges that he and the other player were getting a bit physical in competition for the ball. Then, the opposing team's goalie picked the ball up and the victim started jogging downfield. That when he says the attacker ran up behind him and punched him in the head, My Suburban Life reports.

He told police he then put his attacker in a headlock and brought him to the ground, when players from the other team punched and kicked him.

He was taken to Edward Hospital in Naperville. He claims not to know the team name or names of the attackers, according to My Suburban Life.

The man, who had not sustained any injuries, refused to press charges, My Suburban Life reported. Police were contacted by hospital employees.
