Thief Swipes Wallet From Cart, Uses Credit Card To Buy Phone In Downers Grove

DOWNERS GROVE, IL — A thief used a woman's credit card to buy an iPhone after he stole her wallet from her cart as she shopped at HomeGoods in Downers Grove.

Police say the theft took place at the store at 1534 Butterfield Rd. between 1:30 p.m. and 2 p.m., according to documents obtained by Patch. The victim said a woman asked for for help getting something off a shelf and that she believes someone else stole her wallet from her purse.

After the wallet was stolen, the fraud department for one of the woman's cards contacted her to let her know someone had charged a $1,300 iPhone on the card. A subsequent attempt to buy a $1,500 iPhone was declined.

According to police, management at HomeGoods told the woman another wallet had been stolen earlier that day.
