DOWNERS GROVE, IL — On Tuesday, the Downers Grove Village Council will conduct a first reading for a special use permit request to open a dentist's office at 5145 Washington St.

During its April 27 meeting, the village's planning and zoning commission recommended approval of the special use permit request with a vote of 7 to 1.

Council Chair Don Rickard cast the sole "nay" vote. During the planning commission meeting, Rickard raised concerns about the parking lot's current design, suggesting it was not thought out sufficiently, village documents show.

Rickard and other commissioners had suggested the petitioner's proposed landscape island be constructed in the lot's southwest corner instead of its northeast corner.

The petitioner plans to occupy the building's first-floor space, which formerly housed another dentist office, but has been vacant since early 2025.
