West Suburban Woman Named Winner of 'Ugliest Garage' Contest

A Glen Ellyn woman has won a local custom garage builders’ contest for having the ugliest garage in the United States, or at least in the Chicago region.

Blue Sky Builders Inc., of Downers Grove, announced the contest this spring. Entrants had until June 30 to send in photos of their ugly garages for a chance to win a flat-screen TV or cash equivalent.

The custom garage building received photos of some nasty-looking garages from all over the country, the bulk coming from the Chicago area, which were happily posted to Blue Sky’s Facebook page.

After receiving a photo of a garage on the verge of collapsing and doors that no longer functioned, the prize was given to a Glen Ellyn resident who would give her name as Mary Lynne A.

Asked how she had felt winning the contest, Mary Lynne A. said she kind of expected it.

“The Ugliest Garage Contest has been a fun way to engage with the community …,” says Scott Wendell, owner of Blue Sky Builders. “When we saw the winning garage, we knew it was one of the ugliest we have encountered. Take a look and you be the judge.”

Work has started on a new garage for the Glen Ellyn woman, which Wendell says is going to look great when it’s finished.

Blue Sky Builders Inc., located at 424 Ogden Road in Downers Grover, has been building custom garages and offering garage repair services in the western suburbs and Chicago area since 1979. The original owners still handle all day to day operations and provide free on-site estimates.
