What drama can teach your children

Summer drama workshop begins July 7th at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Downers Grove

A recent UCLA study concluded that students involved in the arts tend to have higher academic performance and better standardized test scores -- nearly 100 points better on the SAT, according to a separate study by The College Board.

Drama workshops and clubs offer wonderful opportunities for children to engage in effective communication and build language skills. Even problem solving is improved when children have to think critically while being involved in skits together. And lets not forget how imagination and creativity can blossom. Drama classes can offer the opportunity to demonstrate how pantomime can build a new form of communication. Overall, dramatic study helps build self-confidence in speaking and social awareness.

According to Jan Barker, at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Downers Grove, this summer’s drama workshop engages children from 1st grade through 6th grade in improvisation, pantomime and skits. We work on concentration, projection, enunciation, memorization and facial expressions. Students will learn stage directions , body positions and theater terminology. We will rehearse for a one-act play to be presented in the evening of July 22nd with full costumes and make-up.
