'Black Lives Matter' Signs Stolen From Elgin Church

The Kane County Sheriff's Office is investigating the thefts.

The Unitarian Universalist Church of Elgin on Saturday morning put up its third "Black Lives Matter" banner on its building after its two prior signs were stolen in the last month. The church hung two Black Lives Matters signs on Jan. 8 and as of early Friday morning, both of the signs had been stolen, according to the Elgin Courier-News.

Members of the congregation told the Elgin Courier-News the Elgin church, located at 39W830 Highland Ave., along with universalist churches throughout the country, have been putting up Black Lives Matter signs as well as discussing the movement in their sermons.

Rev. Leslie Mills told the newspaper she wishes those who were stealing the signs would instead take the time to find out why the church is supporting the movement. She said one reason has to do with the fact that the Elgin church has a long history of having a majority of white members in its congregation so reaching out to minorities is important.

The Kane County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the thefts and the local church is looking at ways to provide more security measures.
