Convicted Felon Charged With Accidentally Shooting Friend

The friend was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

ELGIN, IL - A 35-year-old Elgin man faces several felony charges after he accidentally shot his friend over the weekend, according to police. Jeffery A. Cohn, of the 100 block of Mosley St. in Elgin, is charged with three counts of unlawful possession of a firearm and one count of reckless discharge of firearm in connection with the April 22 shooting. Police said Cohn was a convicted felon who did not possess a valid firearms owner's identification card.

The charges come after the Elgin Police Department responded to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates at about 5:53 a.m. on April 22 for a report of a gunshot victim, according to a news release from the Elgin Police Department.

There they found a victim with non-life-threatening injuries. Officers learned the victim was accidentally shot by his friend while they were at the friend’s house in the 100 block of Mosley St., according to police.

Detectives responded and conducted a follow-up investigation and determined Cohn was allegedly responsible for shooting the victim. Cohn was taken into custody at the Mosley residence without incident.

A search warrant was conducted within the residence and two firearms and ammunition were located. Police also learned Cohn is a convicted felon who did not possess a valid FOID card.

Bond was set at $50,000 for Cohn.
