Dead Person Found After House Fire Had Gunshot Wound: Coroner

Authorities are continuing to investigate the blaze near East Dundee that broke out early Wednesday.

KANE COUNTY, IL - Authorities are working to identify a person who was found dead inside a home near East Dundee following a house fire early Wednesday. During an autopsy on Thursday, Kane County Coroner Rob Russell said a bullet was found inside the body. Authorities have been unable to identify the individual due to the extent of fire damage, Russell said in a news release.

The Kane County Sheriff's Office was called to the blaze at 15N384 Richardson Drive near East Dundee at about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday. After fire crews put out the fire, they found the body of one person and a dog inside.

Detectives believe the fire was set intentionally, Kane County Sheriff's Office Lt. Patrick Gengler said in a news release. The Kane Country Sheriff’s Office, Kane County Major Crime’s Task Force, Kane County Coroner’s Office and Kane County Fire Investigation Task Force are continuing their investigation into the incident.

Toxicology samples have been set to a forensic lab for analysis, Russell said. The coroner's office is still working to determine the cause of death.

"This incident is great reminder of how we must do our due diligence," Russell said. "We rely heavily on science to definitely determine identity as well as cause and manner of death."
