Disabled Train Closes Streets in Downtown Elgin

Union Pacific officials are hoping to have the train back up and running soon.

A Union Pacific train blew an engine and forced city officials to close a portion of Route 31 in Elgin Monday morning. The incident happened earlier this morning. Initially, the trained blocked s intersection of Lawrence Street and the train tracks, which is west of State Street, and National Street and the train tracks, which is east of State St. Union Pacific according to city officials.

Since, the Kimball Street river crossing has reopened but Lawrence Avenue west of Route 31 is still closed, according to a Facebook post from the city of Elgin. Union Pacific has a new engine en route and estimates they will possibly begin to clear the train from the tracks by 10 a.m.
