Elgin Academy Senior, Caitlin Sharma, has been named to the 2017-18 Fox Valley Daily Herald Leadership Team. Caitlin, the daughter of Diane and Shashi Sharma of Elgin, is a member of the National Honor Society, a PADS volunteer, head of the Elgin Academy Student Ambassador’s program, soup kitchen volunteer and a member of the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program.
According to the Daily Herald, Members of the Leadership Team “have embraced volunteering as a life choice…they not only volunteer, they lead – organizing, publicizing, recruiting and fundraising for causes that matter to them.”
As part of her nomination essay Caitlin said, “As a student fellow for Raja Krishnamoorthi for Congress, I learned the importance of a different kind of community service. During this past election year, I met so many constituents who had not realized the importance of their vote. Whether I got the door slammed in my face, a dial tone immediately after I greeted the person, or an earful of swears and insults, I never lost hope that somehow the work I was doing would make a difference.”

In addition to her many other activities, Caitlin is also co-editor-in-chief of the Elgin Academy school newspaper, The Cupola. Doug Sept, Upper School Director, said, “This fall Caitlin and a close friend took it upon themselves to reboot the student newspaper by developing a new publication format and implementing a more organized structure of delegation and deadlines.”
Caitlin, who came to Elgin Academy in 6th grade, will graduate in June and plans to pursue studies in history and international relations. Elgin Academy is a private, Preschool through Grade 12 school located in downtown Elgin serving students and families by taking learning personally since 1839.
