Elgin's own unique active and participatory Semiquincentennial America250 celebration

In an effort to bring the community together to participate in America 250, the Elgin Development Group’s Enhancing Elgin Committee of the Elgin Area Chamber of Commerce
is coordinating an active and participatory Semiquincentennial celebration.

“The Chamber office is hosting a new website, elginil250.com, which was created by my Chamber colleague, Terry Gajewski, for our Enhancing Elgin Committee,” says Carol Gieske, CEO/President, Elgin Area Chamber. “It is full of information highlighting all of the community’s efforts to honor America 250 with a local twist on our history shaped by innovation, diversity, and community pride.”

The website features: a wide variety of information on how local residents and businesses can get involved; listings of local events; and interesting stories on how “butter” is tied in with the history of Elgin. Visitors are encouraged to stop by the Gail Borden Public Library to view four intricately carved butter sculptures currently on display, featuring an eagle, George Washington, Old Main, and a dairy cow—each representing a piece of Elgin’s heritage.

Residents are invited to get involved by submitting their treasured family recipe to be included in a new Elgin Community Cookbook and to share their favorite Elgin-centric story and meaningful memory and photo that evokes the uniqueness of Elgin.

Young artists under age 18, who are Elgin residents or students, are invited to submit original artwork that expresses a vision for the future. Side Street Studio Arts, with community partners, seeks artists to explore freedom, possibility, and what comes next. One selected design will inspire a permanent downtown Elgin sculpture in 2026.
