This Summer's Street Resurfacing, Bridge Rehab Work In Elgin

Road, bridge and sanitary sewer projects are expected to get underway in July.

ELGIN, IL – The city of Elgin plans to spend $6.4 million this year to resurface streets, rehab bridges update and update its sanitary sewer systems. In total, the money will cover the cost for resurfacing 8.73 miles of streets, adding 2,900 feet of sanitary sewer and for the rehabilitation of 15 bridges.

Roadway Resurfacing

Between July and November, four total miles of roadways in the northeast area of Elgin will be resurfaced, which will cost $2.1 million. Roadways planned for resurfacing include:

  • Cooper Avenue from Brook Street to North Spring Street
  • Lincoln Avenue from Prospect Boulevard to Augusta Avenue
  • Lovell Street from West end to St. Johns Street
  • Jefferson Avenue from McBride to North Spring streets
  • Julian Avenue from West end to North Grove Avenue
  • Plum Street from North Grove Avenue to North Spring Street
  • Brook Street from River Bluff Road to Kimball Street
  • Center Street from River Bluff Road to Cooper Avenue
  • Center Street from Lincoln Avenue to Jefferson Avenue
  • Prospect Boulevard from Cooper Avenue to Jefferson Avenue
  • St. Johns Street from Slade Avenue to Lovell Street
  • Augusta Avenue from Slade Avenue to Lovell Street
  • Logan Avenue from Lincoln Avenue to Jefferson Avenue
  • Cedar Avenue from Lincoln Avenue to Lovell Street

Resurfacing on 2.7 miles of roadway will be completed in the Elgin National Watch District. In addition, city plans to resurface 2.1 miles of its "collector streets." Those road projects will cost a total of $2.2 million.

  • National Street from the Fox River to Villa Street
  • St. Charles Street from Route 20 to Villa Street
  • Upper Wellington Avenue from National Street to Hastings Street
  • Lower Wellington Avenue from South Terminus to Bent Street
  • Watch Street from St. Charles to Upper Wellington
  • Yarwood Street from St. Charles to Raymond Street
  • McClean Boulevard from Bowes Road to Spartan Drive
  • Valley Creek Drive from Alice Place to Colorado Drive
  • South Water Road from south terminus to Copper Springs Lane

Bridge Rehab Projects

This year, 15 total bridges across Elgin will be repaired as a way to fix issues to eliminate any further damage and extend the life of the structures, according to city documents. Repair needs are determined as part of the city's bridge inspection program.

In total, $300,000 will be spent on bridge rehab projects in 2018.

  • Damisch Road over Tyler Creek
  • Airlite Street over Sandy Creek
  • Crawford Road over Bowes Creek
  • Garden Crescent over Tyler Creek
  • Bent Street over Willow Creek
  • Laurel Street over Willow Creek
  • Varsity Drive over Poplar Creek

Sanitary Sewer Upgrades

The city will spend $1.19 million for a new gravity flow sanitary sewer. The Bowes Road Interceptor project is expected to get underway in July and continue through November.

The city's sanitary sewer lining project will include 15 locations and 1.48 total miles for a cost of $548,000.
