2 Elmhurst Aldermen Lose County Races

A former Elmhurst council candidate tops her opponents in County Board primary.

ELMHURST, IL – Elmhurst aldermen Bob Dunn and Jennifer Veremis lost in their Republican primary races for DuPage County Board seats in Tuesday's election.

In the District 1 Republican primary, Dunn finished last among five candidates in the primary, with 14 percent.

The three top GOP candidates go on to the November election. They are incumbents Sam Tornatore of Roselle and Donald Puchalski of Addison, with 25 percent and 22 percent, respectively, and Cindy Cronin Cahill, with 23 percent. Maria Reyes came in fourth, with 15 percent.

Cahill, an accountant and Elmhurst resident, is the sister of Republican DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin, who decided against running for a fourth term.

In the District 2 GOP primary, Veremis finished fourth out of six candidates, with 15 percent. The top vote-getter was former County Board member Sean Noonan of Elmhurst, at 28 percent. The other winners were Daniel Kordik, an attorney from Oak Brook, at 18 percent and Nicole Marie Giannini, who is in marketing, at 16 percent.

Besides Veremis, John Simpson and Grant Dungan lost, with 12 percent and 11 percent, respectively.

In District 1, Michael Childress was the lone candidate in the Democratic primary.

Among District 2 Democrats, attorney Yeena Yoo, who unsuccessfully ran for Elmhurst City Council in 2021, topped her rivals, drawing 33 percent. The other two winners were incumbents Liz Chaplin of Downers Grove and Paula Deacon Garcia of Lisle, who received 25 percent and 23 percent, respectively. Maryann Vazquez, who received 19 percent, lost.

The historically Republican-controlled County Board became majority Democrat in the 2020 election.
