ELMHURST, IL – Elmhurst's purchase of two houses on Eggleston Avenue will address two pressing issues in the Spring Road area – flooding and parking, the city said Wednesday.

In meetings over the last couple of months, the City Council has voted to spend $905,000 on the houses at 316 and 322 W. Eggleston Ave.

With the properties, the city said it could install underground stormwater detention that would store 10 acre-feet of water, or 3.2 million gallons.

The capacity will protect against a 100-year level storm, according to a city news release.

Also, the properties will be used for parking, providing 48 new spots for the Spring Road Business District, the city said.

"The Spring Road Business District has been growing rapidly over the last decade," Mayor Scott Levin said in the news release. "I'm glad we've found a solution to help our business community while simultaneously addressing the stormwater management challenges of this area. I give credit to our city council in their decision to address these pressing needs which demonstrate our commitment to community growth and well-being."

Designs for the Eggleston project are expected to start in 2025 and construction in 2027, according to the city.

The project's cost is estimated at $6.5 million, of which the city has secured $2 million in outside grants.
