Armed Prowler Seen Near Elmhurst Home: Cops

The man checked whether a car was unlocked. The same night, a car was stolen elsewhere in Elmhurst, police said.

ELMHURST, IL – An armed prowler was seen on surveillance video early Sunday morning at a house in an Elmhurst neighborhood, police said.

The prowler was recorded about 5:45 a.m. in the 400 block of South Washington Street, according to a police news release. The resident reported the incident about two hours later.

The man was seen approaching the resident's parked car and trying to open the driver's side handles, but the car was locked, police said.

The suspect ran toward the street, got into the driver's seat of a gray four-door car and drove away with no headlights on.

Police said a close review of the video showed an object in the suspect's right hand that appeared to be a handgun, police said.

Officers canvassed the neighborhood and found at least two other cars had items stolen, according to the news release.

In another incident, a resident in the 100 block of East Oneida Avenue reported a car stolen overnight. It was unlocked with the key inside, police said.

The stolen car was later found on the south side of Chicago, the release said.

Police said it was unknown whether the same suspect was responsible for both incidents.

Police also said they were working to identify the suspect in the video. He was described as wearing a mask, a blue hooded sweatshirt, a black coat and gray pants. No other information on his description was available.
