Bethel United Church of Christ Presents Chamber Music Concert

Music@Bethel's Jeff Panko joins fellow Indigo Ensemble members for an evening concert of piano quintets by Mozart, Granados and Dvořák.

Bethel United Church of Christ is thrilled to present Jeff Panko and Friends on Saturday, October 15th at 7:00 p.m. for an evening concert of chamber music scored for piano and strings. The group will perform the string quintets of W.A. Mozart, Enrique Granados and Antonín Dvořák. Instrumentalists include Jennifer Leckie, violin; Yuriy Geyer, violin; Uli Widmaier, viola; Tim Archbold, cello; and Jeffrey Panko, piano.

All artists, including Artistic Director Jeffrey Panko, are members of the acclaimed Indigo Ensemble.

“Each of the five Indigo Ensemble members have performed for our Music@Bethel series as soloists or in smaller ensembles, and I am thrilled we will all finally join forces for the first time in this program of heartfelt, beautiful chamber music,” said Panko.

Rising Star 14 year-old pianist Zarin Mehta, a student of Jeffrey Panko, will make a guest appearance playing the fiendishly difficult Transcendental Étude No. 8 in C minor Wilde Jagd, by Franz Liszt.

Mozart’s joyous 12th Piano Concerto in A major, originally scored in 1782 for solo piano and chamber orchestra, was one of several piano concerti arranged by Mozart in 1783 using a more intimate setting for piano and string quartet.

A hidden gem in the chamber music repertoire, Granados’ Piano Quintet from 1894 soars with the idiomatic neo-romantic passion and beauty found in the works of this great Spanish master composer. A phenomenal pianist known for his great improvisatory skills, Granados’ piano quintet showcases both the virtuosic and intimate elements of the ensemble as a whole.

The program will conclude with Dvořák’s famous piano quintet, one of the most treasured works of the chamber music repertoire. A reworking of his Op. 5 Piano Quintet which he destroyed after its premiere, the Op. 81 Quintet is a mixture of Dvořák’s personal form of expressive lyricism with elements from Czech folk music.
