Car Stolen From Elmhurst Repair Shop: Cops

In other cases, jewelry was stolen from two places in town, police said.

ELMHURST, IL – In the last few days, Elmhurst police handled cases involving a car theft, thefts of jewelry, car break-ins, a bail bond violation, damage and retail theft, among other incidents. Here is information from the latest Elmhurst police reports:

Car theft

  • About 4 a.m. Saturday, an officer saw an open bay door at Just Tires, 236 N. Route 83. He then noticed a broken glass door. A 2018 black BMW X3 sport utility vehicle was stolen.

  • A resident in the 700 block of South Euclid Avenue told police Saturday that she believed two contractors stole jewelry while doing work in her home.
  • A man told police Thursday that someone stole his wife's jewelry while she was at Bella Terra nursing home, 420 W. Butterfield Road, several months ago.

Theft of services

  • Avis Rental, 890 N. York St., told police Friday that someone failed to return a rental vehicle on the agreed-upon date. The company has made numerous attempts to contact the suspect. The car was rented out Feb. 4.

  • A wallet was stolen from a center console of a car between 5:30 p.m. Saturday and 9:30 a.m. Sunday in the 500 block of West Armitage Avenue. The owner's credit card was then used at a nearby gas station.
  • Someone broke the passenger side window of a work vehicle and removed a set of keys and a pack of cigarettes overnight Wednesday in the 100 block of East North End Avenue.
  • Someone entered two cars between Oct. 20 and Nov. 4 at Okaz Motors, 594 W. Lake St., and peeled the steering columns back. Pieces of the ignition were found on the floorboards.
  • An Oakley backpack was stolen on Wednesday or Thursday from the passenger seat of a car at 155 N. Industrial Drive.

Bail bond violation

  • Zermairah Hughes-Edwards, 20, of Elmhurst, was arrested about 2:30 p.m. Friday on a charge of violating her bail bond. The victim told officers that Hughes-Edwards, his ex-girlfriend, broke into his apartment and went through his belongings. She crawled through a window after trying her key. The locks had changed. She was taken to the DuPage County Jail.

Mail theft

  • A resident in the 100 block of West Park Avenue told police Friday that a check being mailed to her was stolen while in transit to her residence. An investigation is pending.

Retail theft

  • Three suspects stole a shopping cart full of liquor about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday at Jewel, 153 E. Schiller St. They then left north on York. Two of the suspects were described as black men, 18 to 35 years old, having brown eyes and wearing dark clothing. One was wearing a hat. The third suspect was described as a black woman, 18 to 35 years old, having brown eyes and a dark complexion, and wearing a black hairpiece, a gray sweatshirt and blue jeans. An investigation is pending.

Bicycle found

  • While on patrol, an officer saw a green bicycle leaning up against a tree Saturday at Butterfield Park, 385 E. Butterfield Road. It was a 29-inch, 10-speed Genesis Maxair 2900 bicycle. It was placed into evidence for safekeeping.

Damage

  • The glass of an exterior storm door was broken about noon Sept. 15 in the 300 block of West Alexander Boulevard. The damage was reported Thursday.

Identity theft

  • Someone made several unauthorized credit card transactions between 3:30 a.m. Wednesday and 11:30 a.m. Friday. Elmhurst School District 205's central office was listed as the victim.
  • A resident in the 600 block of South Fairchild Avenue told police Friday that someone opened a Bank of America checking account using the resident's personal information. The resident put a hold on her account and plans to freeze her credit.
