Cemetery Theft, Dog Bites: Elmhurst Cops

ELMHURST, IL – In recent days, Elmhurst police handled calls involving a cemetery theft, dog bites, retail theft, an intoxicated man, a missing woman, a sick raccoon, a car break-in and falls, among other incidents. Here is information from the police reports:

Cemetery theft

  • A woman told police Sunday that a bronze vase was stolen from her parents' headstone at Mount Emblem Cemetery, 520 E. Grand Ave.

  • A resident in the 900 block of South Cadwell Avenue told police that her labrador retriever ran out of the yard toward a leashed dog on the sidewalk. The resident's dog was then bitten.
  • Two people were walking dogs on a leash about 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the 200 block of Madison Street. As a woman moved aside to let them pass, one of the people's dogs bit her forearm.

Retail theft

  • A man was seen putting merchandise in his pants and leaving without paying for it about 9:30 p.m. Thursday at Jewel, 153 E. Schiller St.
  • Two men stole several bottles of alcohol about 7:30 p.m. Friday at Jewel, 153 E. Schiller St. One of the men was described as white, 25 to 35, bald, having a medium build, and wearing a hoodie with a "Nike" logo and a surgical mask. The other one was described as white, 25 to 35, having black hair, a black beard and a mustache, having a heavy build, and wearing a green hooded sweatshirt with "Puma" on the front.
  • A man stole merchandise about 12:30 a.m. Monday at the Shell gas station, 654 W. North Ave. He entered a black Chevrolet Cruze, last seen heading north on Route 83. The man was described as white, 5-foot-10, in his 30s, having brown hair, and wearing a gray sweater and blue jeans. An investigation is pending.

Intoxicated man

  • A man entered K&T Tires, 568 S. York St., and smelled of alcohol about 11 a.m. Thursday. The owners, who were concerned about the man's level of intoxication, signed a no-trespass notice against the man.

Missing woman

  • Officers responded to a call about a woman with a disability who had walked off from her transportation about 4:30 p.m. Thursday in the 100 block of East Park Avenue. She was found and returned to her transportation.

Raccoon shot

  • A sick or injured raccoon was shot to death by an officer about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in the 200 block of South Monterey Avenue.

Car break-in

  • A car in the 400 block of West Grand Avenue was burglarized between 11 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. Friday. A lug nut set was stolen. An investigation is pending.

Fugitive driver

  • An officer tried to stop a driver for speeding and improper lighting about 1:30 a.m. Saturday at Park and Kenmore. The driver sped away, last seen heading south on Cottage Hill Avenue.

Falls

  • A woman reported she stumbled and may have sprained her ankle about 11:30 a.m. Saturday at South and York. She declined further medical treatment.
  • A person fell about 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Ridge and Holly avenues. The victim had no injuries and declined further medical treatment.

Attempted burglary

  • The occupants of a silver Mercury Mariner were stopped about 5 p.m. Saturday for what was considered an attempted house burglary in the 400 block of West St. Charles Road. The occupants said they had stopped in the driveway to make a phone call, but denied ever attempting to enter the house. Police found no evidence of attempted entry. Nothing was missing from the house.

Stolen car

  • An officer found an unoccupied Toyota Venza about 10 a.m. Sunday that was reported stolen in unincorporated Glen Ellyn. The suspect was found and told police she was living out of the car, which belonged to her parents. The DuPage County Sheriff's Office was told the suspect was originally given restrictions on driving the car, but no charges would be filed. She was released.

Drug theft

  • Several prescription pills were stolen from two patients Saturday at The Grove nursing home, 127 W. Diversey Ave. An investigation is pending.

Broken window

  • A back door glass window was shattered between 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Thursday at a house in the 300 block of West Alexander Boulevard.

Bicycle issues

  • A resident found a blue and white Huffy brand bicycle in her front yard about 1 p.m. Friday in the 900 block of South Washington Street. The bike was placed into evidence for safekeeping.
  • A woman told police that her bicycle was stolen about noon July 21 from Elmhurst University. She did not know the serial number on her bike. The theft was reported Saturday.
