Dating Scam, Dog Bites: Elmhurst Cops

A resident sent money to someone he met on a dating app, police said.

ELMHURST, IL – In the last few days, Elmhurst police handled cases involving a dating scam, dog bites, threats to a business, check fraud, abandoned vehicles, road rage and a backyard fire, among other incidents. Here is information from the latest Elmhurst police reports:

Dating scam

  • A resident in the 300 block of North Maple Avenue told police Monday that he sent money to someone he met on a dating app. The suspect asked for more money, but the resident refused and ended the conversation.

  • Joseph A. Hatz, 86, of Elmhurst, was cited about 10 a.m. Monday on a charge of an unrestrained animal. According to a police report, a woman said she was bitten by a dog while she was taking a walk in the 800 block of South Hawthorne, where Hatz lives.
  • A woman told police she was bitten by a suspect's dog entering the elevator at her apartment complex about 6 a.m. June 23 on Atrium Way. She made the report Wednesday. A report was filed with DuPage County Animal Services.

Threats to business

  • The State Farm Insurance branch at 447 N. York St. received threatening voicemails and emails from a former client Monday and Tuesday. An officer was unable to get in touch with the person.

  • A person was found sleeping about 7:30 a.m. Monday in the 300 block of West Harrison. The person was found to be intoxicated and taken to Elmhurst Hospital. The person was told to leave the hospital after treatment because of an existing no-trespass order.

Check fraud

  • A resident in the 100 block of Glenview Avenue told police Monday that someone cashed fraudulent checks against her bank account. She contacted her bank and froze her account.

Car theft

  • Napleton Kia told police that someone rented a car from the dealership on April 16 for six days, but never returned it. The dealership has been unable to reach the person. An officer was also unsuccessful. The report was filed Monday. An investigation is pending.

Abandoned vehicles

  • About 8 p.m. Monday, police received a report of an abandoned black Dodge 1500 pickup truck. It was stolen in DuPage County. The Sheriff's Office took possession of the car.
  • An officer saw a Honda Accord with heavy front-end damage about 3 a.m. Wednesday at Fair and Webster. The officer tried to contact the registered owner, but was unsuccessful. The car was red-tagged, to be towed in 10 hours under a city ordinance.

Hotel disturbance

  • Officers responded to a disturbance about 10:30 p.m. Monday at Courtyard by Marriott, 370 N. Route 83. The suspects were not guests at the hotel, but were there all day and caused a disturbance in the lobby. They were given no-trespass notices and left.

Tire theft

  • Suspects removed two spare tires from two Ford cargo vans that were parked overnight Sunday at Enterprise Leasing, 897 N. York St. The suspects' cars were a 1990s silver Lincoln Town Car and a 2000s Toyota Highlander.

Car damage

  • A rock was thrown at the back window of a Chevrolet Impala between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. Monday in the 900 block of South Chatham Avenue.

Riders flee

  • An officer saw the riders of six mini bikes commit different traffic violations about 8 p.m. Tuesday near York and Wilson streets. The officer tried to stop the riders, but they sped away, last seen heading east on St. Charles Road, past Interstate 290.

Road rage

  • A road rage incident took place about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday near Route 83 and Interstate 290. The suspect threw something at a woman's car, causing a dent. An officer tried to contact the suspect, but was unsuccessful. An investigation is pending.

Fugitive driver

  • An officer tried to stop a driver for speeding about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday at Butterfield Road and Route 83. The driver sped away, heading west on Butterfield.

Custody dispute

  • Police responded to a dispute over child custody days Wednesday in the 100 block of North Caroline Avenue.

Bicycles found

  • A purple and pink girls Trek bicycle was found about 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Butterfield Park playground in the 300 block of East Van Buren Street. The bicycle appeared to have been damaged and was placed into evidence for safekeeping.
  • A locked Pave N Trail bicycle was stolen between 7 a.m. July 7 and 10 a.m. July 9 at the train depot, 128 W. First St.

Backyard fire

  • Firefighters responded to a fire about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 200 block of East Crescent Avenue. A rear wooden fence in a backyard was on fire. The homeowner said she had been using the fire pit.

Driving violations

  • Tris Evans Madison, 29, of Franklin, Louisiana, was arrested about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday at Route 83 and Elizabeth Street on charges of obstructing identification, no valid driver's license, possession of marijuana by a driver, driving an uninsured motor vehicle, speeding and possession of open alcohol. Police said Madison provided them with a false name. He was released on bond.
  • Jason Logan, 28, of Elmwood Park, was cited about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at York and North End on charges of driving with a suspended license, driving a vehicle with a suspended registration, driving an uninsured vehicle and not wearing a seatbelt. He was released on bond.
  • Kevin Mguyen, 22, of Chicago, was cited about 11 p.m. Tuesday at North and Interstate 290 on charges of driving with a suspended license, possession of marijuana and no rear license plate light. He was released on bond.
