Elmhurst Cops Keep Sought-After Designation

Few departments get this accreditation. It occurred after assessors went on ride-alongs and sought residents' feedback, among other things.

ELMHURST, IL – The Elmhurst Police Department kept its top accreditation with a law enforcement program, the city announced Wednesday.

Only 5 percent of Illinois police departments have received the Tier 1 accreditation from the Illinois Law Enforcement Accreditation Program Council. That amounts to 60 agencies.

The accreditation was awarded after an extensive process that included an in-depth review of the police department's policies and procedures, selection and hiring, achievements and training, the city said in a news release.

The program's trained assessors spent two days on site. They interviewed officers, went on ride-alongs, oversaw lockup procedures, viewed records, inspected evidence procedures and sought feedback from residents, the release said.

“This reaccreditation showcases the professionalism that officers of the Elmhurst Police Department proudly display in our community every day," Police Chief Michael McLean said in the news release.
