Elmhurst Coronavirus: 'Signficant' Impact On Economy

ELMHURST, IL — The coronavirus has had a "significant economic impact" on Elmhurst, including the loss of business and income, Mayor Steve Morley said in an address to the community Wednesday. He noted he has issued executive orders to lessen the hardships because of the spread of the virus, he said.

"We are constantly evaluating ways in which we can provide services and relief to our community during this difficult time," Morley said in a YouTube video.

He asked residents to practice social distancing and to not leave their homes for nonessential trips.

"You are risking your life and the lives of others if you choose to ignore these restrictions," the mayor said. "Physical isolation and self-quarantine is required to combat the spread of this virus."

Under Morley's executive orders during the coronavirus emergency, the city will:

• Not suspend water, sewer or refuse services regardless of payment status.
• Extend the deadline for city vehicle sticker payments to June 1.
• Suspend the city code relating to certain liquor licenses. This will allow for retail sales of originally packaged beer, wine and liquor for off-premises consumption during regularly permitted hours under existing ordinances.
• Suspend the issuance of solicitor permits. Anyone who encounters a solicitor should contact Elmhurst police.

"With these orders in place, we continue our mission in supporting the Elmhurst community during this troubled time," Morley said.
