ICE Jail Talk In Elmhurst May Lead To Action

ELMHURST, IL – Many have speculated that a proposed Elmhurst warehouse serves as a Trojan horse for an ICE jail, which the developer denies.

In light of the debate, Elmhurst aldermen Guy Nardini and Karen Sienko are requesting that the city consider specifically addressing jails, including those for immigrants, in the local zoning code.

In a memo this week, the aldermen did not refer to the controversy over the warehouse.

They want the city to consider whether jails should be prohibited in certain zoning districts and required to have special use permits.

In February, the warehouse developer, Alliance Industrial, sold two Georgia warehouses to ICE for $68 million.

At a public hearing last week, Alliance representatives offered a deed restriction that would bar the possibility of an ICE jail for good.

Many Democrats, including Nardini, have criticized ICE under President Donald Trump.
