ELMHURST, IL – Elmhurst School District 205 checked out a Bensenville church property for sale, but decided the building did not fit its needs, an official said Wednesday.

Chris Whelton, assistant superintendent for finance, told school board members that the district assessed the old St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 145 E. Grand Ave., which closed earlier in the summer.

"We didn't really have a need for it," he said at a finance committee meeting.

Board member Jim Collins told Whelton that he appreciated the district doing that.

"It's rare a piece of property of that size comes up for sale," he said. "Every time that happens, we should consider it."

Collins said his understanding was that the church had an offer for the property.

The district includes the part of Bensenville where the church is.

The church is a few blocks north of Conrad Fischer Elementary School in Elmhurst. At 545 students, Fischer has the highest enrollment of the district's eight elementary schools.

Officials have spoken before about the demands on the school's space, noting the district-wide dual-language program is housed there.
