Elmhurst Firm Victim Of Gift Card Scam: Police

ELMHURST, IL – In the last few days, Elmhurst police handled cases involving a gift card scam, an unusual substance, a domestic disturbance, fraud, a custody agreement violation, porch piracy and a fugitive driver. Here is information from the latest Elmhurst police reports:

Gift card scam

  • An employee at LW Reedy Real Estate, 101 N. York St., told police Friday that he received text messages from a person who purported to be his boss. The suspect requested the employee buy iTunes gift cards. After sending the gift card information, the employee realized it was a scam.

  • A resident in the 800 block of South Hawthorne Avenue told police Friday she opened two containers of powdered mousse that she had bought around Christmas last year and believed the contents to be unusual. A fire department hazardous materials test determined the substance to be a non-harmful food product.

Domestic disturbances

  • Police responded to a domestic disturbance about 6:30 a.m. Saturday in the 600 block of North Howard Avenue. Officers met with a suspect who had been banging on the door to the house. The resident did not want her to be there. The suspect was issued a no-trespass notice.
  • A woman and the father of her baby got into an argument about 10 p.m. Thursday in the 600 block of South York Street. No one was injured, and the two people agreed to separate for the night.

  • A person was stumbling and bothering customers about 10 p.m. Friday at 100 South Chop House, 100 S. York St. The person was served a no-trespass notice.

Fraud

  • A man was notified by his credit card company that a fraudulent charge was made shortly after 1 p.m. Thursday at Al Piemonte Buick, 346 W. Grand Ave. An officer responded and arrested two people. The suspects were fingerprinted and released without charges. An additional investigation is pending.
  • Innovative Support Solutions, 259 E. Third St., told police Thursday that someone obtained a business check and cashed it. The business called its bank, and the transaction was canceled.

Argument

  • Two people got into an argument between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Feb. 15 at Stray Hen, 105 S. York St. No one was injured. The incident was reported Thursday.

Identity theft

  • A resident in the 400 block of North Howard Avenue told police Friday that ComEd reported it had not received her payment. She recalled mailing the check from a post office mailbox on Cottage Hill, which was burglarized. Her bank told her that someone had altered and cashed the check mailed to ComEd. The resident closed her bank account to prevent any more fraud.

Custody agreement violation

  • A resident in the 100 block of South Kenilworth Avenue told police Friday that his ex-wife refused to follow their court-ordered parenting agreement for child visitation. The ex-wife said she was not following it because of a recently filed police report. An investigation is pending.

Porch piracy

  • A package was stolen between 1:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. Friday in the 100 block of North Berteau.

Fugitive driver

  • About 5:30 p.m. Friday, an officer tried to stop the driver of a white Infiniti Q70 that was suspected in a case involving fleeing from Berkeley police. The driver sped away, heading south on Route 83.

Damage

  • A woman told police she saw several youths damage a bathroom door at Berens Park, 493 N. Oaklawn Ave. An investigation is pending.

Theft

  • The rims and tires of a car were stolen between 11:30 p.m. Saturday and 7:30 a.m. Sunday in the 100 block of West Butterfield Road. An investigation is pending.
