ELMHURST, IL – Elmhurst's mayor warned the public Monday about where they can place campaign signs.

Mayor Scott Levin's reminder comes as the Nov. 8 election approaches.

At a City Council meeting, Levin said a city ordinance bars signs in the parkway, which is the city right-of-way on both sides of the street. (A limited exception exists for yard sale signs.)

"We've had a number of calls from people about signs in the parkways," Levin said. "We try to contact political campaigns to let them know not to put them in the parkway."

Levin said the city would take steps to clear the parkways of signs.

Under the First Amendment, governments cannot regulate the messages on signs or discriminate in the enforcement of sign rules.

"We don't regulate when political signs come up or down, but we do regulate the size of them," Levin said. "If it's not the standard size political sign and you have a giant sign in your yard, that is not permitted. You'll be asked to take those down."
