Elmhurst Officers Save 67-Year-Old's Life: Police

The victim's children and grandchildren thanked the officers for their rescue.

ELMHURST, IL – Two Elmhurst police officers have been commended for saving the life of a 67-year-old man in a DuPage County field courtroom, according to a police news release.

On July 20, the man lost consciousness, stopped breathing and did not have a pulse, police said.

The officers, James Ostrega and Leo Elizalde, gave the man chest compressions and applied an automated external defibrillator, or AED.

They then administered a shock. Shortly after, the man regained consciousness and was taken to a hospital, where he recovered, police said.

The police held a ceremony for the officers Wednesday night at the police station. The man's children and grandchildren showed up to thank the officers, giving them teddy bears.
