Elmhurst Park District Holds Work Day at Great Western Prairie

Those interested can meet at the Great Western Prairie, at the intersection of Berkley Avenue and Prairie Path, just west of Spring Road.

ELMHURST, IL — Volunteers can help maintain Elmhurst's stretch of 10,000-year-old prairie at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 20. Those interested can meet at the Great Western Prairie, at the intersection of Berkley Avenue and Prairie Path, just west of Spring Road.

The park district said this area is the oldest living environment in Elmhurst, and adds a special ecological dimension to the community.

According to a release, volunteers should make sure to wear sturdy shoes and bring work gloves.

According to a release, Elmhurst's Great Western Prairie is a six-acre strip adjacent to and north of the Illinois Prairie Path. The property is owned and maintained by the Elmhurst Park District. It is bound by Spring Road on the east; Salt Creek on the west; the abandoned right-of-way of the Chicago Great Western Railway on the north; and the abandoned right-of-way of the Chicago, Aurora and Elgin Railway (now known as the Illinois Prairie Path) on the south.

Workdays are generally held on the third Saturday of each month.
