Elmhurst Police Plan Roadside Safety Checkpoint

ELMHURST, IL — The Elmhurst Police Department will hold a roadside safety checkpoint starting Saturday, June 16 at 11 p.m., and continuing until 3 a.m. Sunday morning. The department said it takes part in a year-long grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation that aims to save lives by reducing fatal and serious injury crashes. To accomplish this goal, the grant provides funding to local police departments for additional enforcement of DUI and seatbelt laws.

As part of this grant, periodic roadside safety checkpoints are set up throughout the year. This weekend's roadside safety checkpoint will take place on a major roadway in Elmhurst, according to the department.

During the roadside safety checkpoint, vehicles will be stopped at a predetermined interval and checked for violations. The department said these types of checkpoints have proven to be a significant deterrent to impaired driving, which in turn reduces traffic fatalities caused by impaired drivers.
