ELMHURST, IL – A resident in an Elmhurst neighborhood came into contact with a man who he later believed burglarized his house, police said.

On the afternoon of Feb. 22, the resident in the 400 block of East Atwater Avenue came home after running a quick errand. He saw an SUV parked in front of the house, police said.

The resident had a short conversation with the driver of the SUV, identified as Kevin Miller, 25 of Justice. Miller asked if there was a car for sale in the area, police said.

After Miller left, the resident noticed a side door ajar. It had been left unlocked. A wet footprint was seen on the kitchen floor. The resident later determined jewelry and other items were missing.

A neighbor's home video recorded Miller's movements, while other area cameras captured his license plate, police said.

Miller was arrested March 30 on a charge of residential burglary, which Patch reported earlier this week. His bond was set at $250,000, with a requirement that he come up with 10 percent. He was released after paying.

Residents are advised to keep their doors locked, even if they're gone for a short time.
