Elmhurst Suspect In UPS Outfit: Cops

In another case, a resident threw away her citizenship papers, police said.

ELMHURST, IL – In the last few days, Elmhurst police handled cases involving a suspect in a UPS driver's outfit, a woman who threw away her citizenship papers, a scam, heroin possession, check fraud, retail theft and inappropriate touching. Here is information from the latest Elmhurst police reports:

UPS driver outfit

  • A man stole four cartons of Newport 100 cigarettes about 3 a.m. Monday at Casey's convenience store, 1000 N. York St. He was last seen headed south on York. He was described as black, 6 feet, having a thin build, about 40, and wearing a full UPS outfit, including the hat.

Citizenship papers disposed

  • A resident in the 300 block of Ridgeland Avenue told police Friday that she threw away her certificate of naturalization on Sept. 10 and needed to file a report for documentation purposes. The certificate is issued to someone who has become a U.S. citizen.

Scam

  • A family in the 200 block of Glade Avenue told police Friday they received a check from someone who was supposedly interested in buying their car. After cashing the check, the suspect received messages requesting the family return the money. The victims sent a portion of the money back to the suspect before realizing they had been deceived.

  • Mario O. Gracia, 27, of Melrose Park, was arrested about 4:30 a.m. Saturday at Lake Street and Interstate 290 on charges of unlawful possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of marijuana by a driver, improper window tinting, driving an uninsured car and no valid driver's license. Police said he was found in possession of cocaine and heroin. He was taken to the DuPage County Jail.

Fraudulent IDs

  • Erika Anahi Hernandez, 25, of Bensenville, was arrested about 11 p.m. Saturday at Lake Street and Grand Avenue on charges of possession of fraudulent identification, no valid driver's license and improper display of registration. Police said she had fraudulent Social Security and permanent resident cards. She was taken to the DuPage County Jail.

Check fraud

  • Elmhurst's chapter of the American Association of University Women told police Thursday that two checks from a used book sale at Christ United Methodist Church, 920 S. Swain Ave., were returned because of insufficient funds and a closed account. An investigation is pending.

Theft of services

  • On June 28, a woman had her BMW SUV towed to BMW of Elmhurst, 500 W. Lake St., where a diagnostic test was completed. She then wanted the car towed to another repair shop. BMW tried to collect payment for its services, but she has not paid. The report was filed Sunday.

Retail theft

  • A man stole bottles of liquor twice on Sunday morning at Jewel, 153 E. Schiller St. He was described as white, 5-foot-11, 30, having long brown hair and a beard, and wearing a black T-shirt with a small key logo on the upper front and a similar logo on the back, and a black baseball cap. An investigation is pending.

Inappropriate touching

  • A person told police Sunday that an employee of Bella Terra Elmhurst nursing home, 420 W. Butterfield Road, inappropriately touched him. An investigation is pending.

Fugitive driver

  • About 6 p.m. Sunday at Route 83 and North Avenue, an officer saw a blue Acura connected to a felony in Hillside. Officers tried to stop the car, but the driver sped away south on Route 83.
