Elmhurst Virus Cases Remain High: County

ELMHURST, IL — Elmhurst continues to see high weekly totals for new coronavirus cases, but the number dropped last week, according to the DuPage County Health Department.

As of Sunday, the city had seen 5,722 cases since the beginning of the pandemic, up 110 from a week before. The week before last, Elmhurst experienced an increase of 151 new cases, which was the highest in nearly a year. In early January, Elmhurst saw a weekly total of 174 new coronavirus cases.

Last week, Elmhurst Hospital reported that it had 37 coronavirus patients, the most in 10 months.

The number of coronavirus-related deaths in Elmhurst increased by one in the last week, to 72. The mortality rate among those locally with the coronavirus is 1.3 percent.

As of Sunday, Elmhurst had 122 coronavirus cases per thousand people since the pandemic's beginning. The figure compares to 105 in Darien, 119 in DuPage County, 120 in Hinsdale, 123 in La Grange Park, 130 in suburban Cook County, 131 in Clarendon Hills, 132 in La Grange and 134 in Western Springs.

As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 1,884,744, a 2.7 percent increase from the previous week, according to the state Department of Public Health. The number of confirmed deaths so far is 26,801.

Nationally, 49.7 million cases of the coronavirus have been reported, a 1.7 percent increase from the previous week, according to the Centers for Disease Control. A total of 793,937 people have died from the virus in the United States.
