Elmhurst Woman Told She Would Win $4.8M: Cops
But she was first asked to send money to a California address, police said.
ELMHURST, IL — It's virtually certain you are a target of a scam if you're told you won a prize but must send money first. An Elmhurst woman apparently learned that the hard way.
On Dec. 8, the resident, who lives in the 100 block of East North Avenue, received a mailing informing her that she won $4,750,000 and a new car from someone purporting to be from the Publishers Clearing House, Elmhurst police said. But the victim was instructed to first send $1,000 to a name and address in California, police said.
The resident complied, but has not received the cash prize or car, police said. The resident reported the scam Friday.
