Elmhurst Woman Victim Of Fake Border Patrol Agent: Cops

She transferred money to clear up an issue involving supposed drug smuggling, police said.

ELMHURST, IL – An Elmhurst resident last week received a phone call from someone claiming to be with the U.S. Border Patrol, who said the resident was suspected of drug smuggling, police said.

The stranger asked the resident in the 200 block of North Highview Avenue to transfer money into a bitcoin account to clear up the issue, police said. The victim transferred an unspecified amount of money over two days and then apparently realized it was a scam, police said.

The crime was reported Friday.
