IC High School Welcomes Distinguished Alumnus Judge William J. Bauer ’44 to Present “A View From the Bench”

On Thursday, November 15th at 7:00pm, Honorable William J. Bauer will be presenting “A View From the Bench” as a part of IC High School’s Alumni Speaker Series.  Judge Bauer (Class of ’44) is also a 2010 IC High School Distinguished Alumni Award winner. This award recognizes the Immaculate Conception High School graduates whose achievements reflect excellence, commitment, service, and witness to the heart and spirit of Catholic education.


Early in his career, Bauer worked his way through the ranks at the DuPage County State's Attorney's office.  He began his judicial career in 1964, on the Circuit Court for the 18th Judicial Circuit in DuPage County from 1964 to 1970.  After serving for a year as the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, he was nominated by President Richard Nixon to a seat on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. He was confirmed to the seat by the U.S. Senate on November 8, 1971 and received his commission two days later.

On December 11, 1974, President Gerald Ford nominated Bauer to a seat on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit vacated by Otto Kerner.  Bauer was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on December 19, 1974, receiving his commission the following day.  He served as chief judge from 1986 to 1993, and assumed senior status on October 31, 1994.
