Field Elementary School Wins 4th Annual Cross-Town Battle of the Books

Edison Elementary School hosted the 4th annual District 205 Cross-Town Battle of the Books after school on April 13.

Teams competed by answering questions about five books selected for the event. The winning teams from each of the six participating schools faced off at the event. Teams from Conrad Fischer, Edison, Emerson, Field, Hawthorne and Jackson participated in the Cross-Town Battle. Field School’s team, The Five Lives, won the 2015 competition. Field was represented by team captain Paige Prather, Connor Bare, Johanna Johnsen, Thalia Lopez and A. J. Swiatek. The team advanced to the Cross-Town competition with a 5-0 record. Karla Talbot, Field Librarian, facilitated the Battle of the Books at Field School.

The Cross-Town event was organized and facilitated by Mary Greska, Edison Librarian; Donna Dewar, Conrad Fischer Librarian; Geri Sorrentino, Hawthorne REACH teacher; and Jim Pluskota, Edison Principal.

The Battle of the Books dates back to a radio program sponsored by the Chicago Public Library in the early 1940s. The program encourages recreational reading, goal setting, working on comprehension skills, and the satisfaction and fun that comes from practicing and working together on a task. Students read and discussed 19 of the 2015 Caudill nominations to prepare for the competition.
