ELMHURST, IL – Most of Elmhurst's schools are seeing work being done this summer.

The biggest project is Field Elementary School, which was demolished in the last month. The construction of a new, larger school in the same spot is expected to last a year.

Two of the other big projects are at Fischer and Jackson elementary schools.

Fischer's work involves a six-classroom addition, among other things. The classrooms are slated to be done by Sept. 15, about a month after school starts.

"The building can still operate without that addition in there. That's extra space," Todd Schmidt, District 205's director of facilities, told the school board. "We're right on schedule where we should be at Fischer."

Jackson, meanwhile, includes the addition of two classrooms and a media center. The classrooms are slated to be ready by the start of school, while the media center is slated for completion by Sept. 15.

"It's coming along very well," Schmidt said.

With all the projects, he said, logistics issues are having an effect.

"We're kind of waiting around until some of the parts get in and hurrying up and getting them in there," Schmidt said. "Those are pretty much the only issues we're really having with a lot of these projects right now."

The projects are being paid for from a $168 million referendum, which voters approved in 2018.
